Abigail's Driving School provides the skills needed that will help you become a smart driver. We provide in class driver education and behind the wheel.  We also provide driver improvement courses which meet Defensive Driving/Traffic School requirements and the 8 hour driver manual course for 3x learner permit failure.

Disclosure on Distance: ***Price is subject to change due to distance of clients' residency/work for behind the wheel lessons (pick/up drop).  The School is not able to provide services to clients located more than 20 miles from our office address at 6002 W. Broad Street Richmond, VA. There will be an additional $50 for anyone that is above 20 miles. 

DEPOSIT: Deposit fee  - $50 . Deposit is intended to reserve the spot you have signed up for. Deposits are non-refundable

Driver's Education

In Virginia, there are various driver education programs for both youths and adults. See below for options.

36 Hr Classroom Periods (Teens)

Virginia requires students younger than 18 years of age who are home schooled or have not taken the course in high school to complete 36 - fifty-minute classroom course instruction before taking the behind the wheel class. To pass the classroom portion of the driver education course, a minimum score of 80% is required. Driver education classes are held on Monday - Saturdays (between 4pm-6pm) with flexible hours to accomodate parents/guardians. The class lasts four - five weeks depending on the student's school/extracular activities schedule. No longer offering in-class Driver's Education.

Behind the Wheel

Students under 18 years of age are required to complete 14, 50-minute periods of behind the wheel training. This includes seven sessions driving and seven sessions observing. Each class will be two periods. You will need your learners permit to take this class. Behind the wheel classes are scheduled between Monday -  Saturday. Abigail's Driving School provides behind the wheel lessons on evenings and weekends. We also provide additional behind the wheel through a partnership with trusted schools in the Richmond area.

  • Cost: $350
    • Requirement: Must have completed 20 Hours of the 45 Hour Driving Log (15 Hours must be after sunset) prior to beginning Behind-the-Wheel. If students do not complete the 36 Hours classroom period with Abigail's Driving School, they must turn in their DEC 1 form before enrolling in the Behind the Wheel class. Speak with you School Administrator's Office or Drivers Education Teacher.

36 Hr. Classroom & Behind the Wheel Package (Teen) - **NO LONGER OFFERING this service. 

Students under 18 years of age can select to take both the 36 - fifty-minute classroom course and behind the wheel as a "package." Cost: $450. With the exception of the deposit, at minimum of 50% is due at the time of registration. 

Adult 60-Day Waiver

Individuals who are 18 years of age and older who have never held any U. S. state issued driver’s license, must hold their Virginia learner’s permit for 60 days prior to being eligible to take the road test at DMV. To waive the requirement to hold the permit for 60 days, the individual can complete a state-approved driver’s education program - also known as the 60-Day Waiver. This course is identical to the teen drivers education program. Cost: $450 - $500

Benefit: The waiver gives an individual older than 18 years of age the option of take the road test at our driving school. The class has two parts.

  • Part One: Student completes 36 periods of class instruction.
  • Part Two: Student completes seven periods of in car observation, and seven periods of behind the wheel experience. At least 10 hours of driving experience required. Must be able to at minimum drive in a residential area and have an understanding of the functions of a vehicle controls.
    • If student has no experience, the price is $500 – the first lesson is a private session in a parking lot. Learner's permit is required before registering for class. All students are expected to practice at minimum of one hour for every behind the wheel lesson they receive with Abigail's Driving School. 
  • DISCLAIMER: We cannot use a 36hr drivers education classroom issued by a high school when YOU DID NOT have a learner's permit to satisfy the Part One of this program. According to the Virginia DMV "If you are age 18 or older and you have never held a license issued by any state, U.S. territory or foreign country, you must hold a learner's permit for a minimum of 60 days or show completion of a state approved driver training course while holding the permit."

Driver's Manual Course/ Re-Examination Class

***If you fail the Virginia DMV knowledge exam three times, you have to complete an 8-Hour Driver Manual Course to satisfy the three-times-failure requirement. 

The driver's manual course, also known as the re-examination class, is for individuals who have failed their learner's permit test at the DMV three times.  This course is $175. 

  • 18 years of age and olderThe class consists of an eight-hour classroom  based on the Virginia Driver's Manual. After completing the course, you will receive the DTS-C (re-examination certificate) and will be eligible to take the general knowledge examination for the fourth time and thereafter.
  • 17 year olds and younger: Teens 17 and younger are also eligible to take the Virginia Driver's Manual course to prepare themselves for the permit test if they have previously completed the classroom component of driver education. Before the individual can take this course, he/she MUST present a certificate of completion for the classroom component of driver education (36 fifty-minute periods), also known as a green card or DEC 1, to the driver training school that will be conducting the driver's manual course. The completion date of the driver's manual course must be after the date that the student failed the knowledge exam the third time. When the student successfully completes the course and gives DMV the certificate of completion, he/she can take the knowledge exam again.

Private Behind the Wheel Lessons

For adults 18 years of age and older who need to gain confidence behind the wheel, the school offers private sessions - 5 lessons of 1 hour for $300.

We DO NOT offer one lesson classes of behind the wheel or DMV car use.
